Jonah Jones and the Gwynedd slate landscape, now a UNESCO world heritage site

6 August 2021

In recognition of the news that the Gwynedd slate landscape has recently been designated as a UNESCO world heritage site, we have chosen three fine examples of Jonah Jones’s inscription and sculpture work in the native Gwynedd slate.

First up is the plaque for the Lloyd George Memorial Museum, Llanystumdwy, c.1960.

Second is the 9th Station of the Cross at the Church of St Joseph, Pwllheli, 1982. Photograph by Stephen Brayne.

Finally, Hedd Dros Wynedd (Peace Over Gwynedd), in slate and Carrara marble, for the North Wales Police Headquarters, Colwyn Bay, 1972 (destroyed in 2002). Photograph by Robert Greetham.
